【記事】Sri Lanka – Floods and Landslides Death Toll Rises to 17

According to the latest figures from the country’s Disaster Management Centre, (DMC), 10 districts have now been affected by floods, landslides and strong winds.

As of 04 June, over 130,000 people were affected across the districts of Gampaha, Ratnapura, Colombo, Puttalam, Kalutara, Nuwara Eliya and Kurunegala. Since then severe weather has also affected residents of Kandy, Galle and Kegalle. DMC said a total of 271,110 people have been affected across the 10 districts.

Several people are thought to be still missing. Around 1,00 homes have been damaged and at least 17 destroyed.

DMC said on 96 June that several spill gates of Deduru Oya reservoir had been opened and advised residents downstream to be vigilant.

The Kuda Ganga river, a tributary of the Kalu Ganga, is at major flood stage at Kalawellawa in Kalutara district, with levels at 9.26 metres as of 07 June, where flood stage is 8 metres.

The Kelani Ganga in Colombo, the Kalu Ganga in Putupaula, the Gin Ganga in Baddegama and the Attanagalu Oya in Dunamale, Gampaha District, are all at minor flood stage. All rivers appear to be showing signs of falling.

The Sri Lanka Navy has deployed 32 relief teams in flood relief operations in the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle and Ratnapura. The navy rescued over 60 flood victims in Gampaha and Kalutara districts. Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Army carried out search and rescue operations in Attanagalla, Ketakalapitiya following the rising water levels reported from the Attanagalu Oya.
